Bearded Dragons

The Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is a type of agamid lizard that is found in the desert regions of Australia. Of the several species of the Pogona genus, P. vitticeps is the most commonly seen in pet stores.

Bearded dragons are omnivores and consume a wide variety of foods. In captivity, dragons will consume crickets, mealworms, and other commercially and wild collected insects as well as vegetable material such as collard greens, turnip greens, and other leafy green vegetables. The bearded dragon keeper should also be sure to supplement the animal's diet with vitamin supplements, most importantly calcium.

The bearded dragon is a medium sized lizard. The keeper should provide a cage no smaller than 36 x 20 for one animal. As a desert species, bearded dragons prefer a basking site in their cage that reaches at least 90 degrees ferenheight during the day. A dragon cage should have a warm side and a cool side with overall cage temperature never below 70 degrees Ferenheight.
